It’s almost September. Soon all the mosquitoes will be replaced with annoying bees and the kids will be back in school. I’ve decided that I need a vacation from life to get caught up - what an idea. A vacation to just give you time to get off the hamster wheel and knock out some serious work. One of the things that I would do with this vacation is get started with the fitness blog that has been on my to do list for a while. So now it begins - milwaukeefitnessblog. An opportunity for me and my staff to keep you in touch with “what’s up” with each of us as we try to get Milwaukee in shape and what’s new in the health and fitness industry. It also might be an opportunity for you to see that we all have struggles fitting fitness and clean eating in our life sometimes too! So here it is … my first blog entry.
Many of you know that July was a very tough time for my family has we had to say good-bye to our dear friend and neighbor Dr. Brad Mays. Brad left our lives too early at age 44 with no chance to say good-bye to his wife Carrie and three young girls Audrey (7), Anna (5) and Kate (2).
Losing Brad was such a hard time for my family and I truly felt like I had checked out of life. Brad and his family were and continue to be the first thing I think of when I wake up or go to bed. Summer, and events like this that make you check our of life can seriously effect your sleep, energy and health and fitness regiment.
That is when it is OK to take some time off and adjust things to make them “fit” into your life. In fact, during stressful time of your life it can be helpful to check out of the stress by taking a walk or doing something else physical. It may sometimes seems like the last thing you can “fit” in but it is the quality not the quantity that counts. By quality I mean the time for both your physical and physchological parts of you to get a needed boost.
The day after Brad died I was scheduled to play a State League tennis match. That morning I missed my early a.m. workout because I barely slept. When I stepped on the court that evening my body and brain focused on tennis and nothing else. It was like a 2 hour vacation from reality. It was a needed vacation.
Do you ever need a vacation from your life? No need to jump on plane or drive in a car to each your vacation destination. Jump on a bike, a treadmill, a weight machine or a sidewalk. Take a mental and physical vacation with exercise.
Check out of life for an hour ——–EXERCISE!
